In this 2nd episode of the podcast, I take a look at UFC lightweight Michael Johnson and his search for treatment of a pretty bad neck injury some years ago.
MMA fighters are independent contractors, and the responsibility for management of injuries is ultimately theirs. The UFC Performance Institute has made a big difference in the quality of care provided to UFC fighters, but still, as independent contractors a fighter can use the UFC PI, or not.
In Johnson’s case, his problems started in 2017, just as the PI was starting up. He was hopping from place to place trying to address his neck issue, all while still competing and dealing with ankle and knee problems as well.
The difference in management of injured athletes in a sport with independent contractors, compared to a sport with a player’s union and negotiating power, is huge.
